Cordierite Thin Section

Cordierite thin section photomicrographs are taken in plane polarized light and cross polarized light and can easily be recognized under the microscope.
Cordierite thin section. Silicon 24 01 si 51 36 sio 2. Crystals short prismatic striated k 001 to 18 cm. Accompanying the andalusite is another metamorphic mineral cordierite which forms indistinct rounded crystals containing many inclusions of biotite and quartz giving it a mottled appearance.
By and large cordierite is colourless in thin sections. Corning s take on cordierite lent itself well to a modified extrusion manufacturing process allowing the creation of a thin walled cell structure with thousands of parallel walls to create a honeycomb like structure. We offer over 200 stock sizes in thicknesses of 1 4 to 1 1 2 and in square rectangular round half round hexagon and octagon shapes.

Blue smoky blue bluish violet. X 0 1 m 2 t 9 0 18 where x h 2 0 co 2 ar xe na k occupying large channels parallel to the c axis created by the pseudohexagonal rings. Molecular weight 584 95 gm magnesium 8 31 mg 13 78 mgo.
General cordierite information. Greenish yellowish brown gray. The thin section also contains fine grained quartz feldspar and biotite.
Dipyramidal mmm h m symbol. Typically granular to compact massive. The iron rich specimens however reveal bluish to purplish grey colour and pleochroism in thicker sections.
